Directors of Freedom Training Christian Ministries
I started drinking and doing drugs while a youth. Through a series of events when I was 37, including a serious car accident, I realized I needed God and turned my life over to Him. I turned away from the life I had been living and entered ministry school.
There, I felt God calling me into missions and specifically to working with people with addictions and other life-controlling problems. At that time God also brought Jenelle and I together. Jenelle had been a committed Christian since she was 15 and a missionary since she was 24.
While finishing ministry school, I entered Christ Center School of Counselling and Addictions Studies. After completion of studies, we ministered in Mexico for 7 years, directing a rehabilitation facility for addicts and alcoholics.
God then moved us to the border area, in the Rio Grande Valley, where the Lord began using me in prison ministry, ministering to the addicts and alcoholics in jail. We have opened a home for paroled prisoners and recovering substance abusers wanting a new start in life.
Our ministry's purpose is to "stick a thumb in the dike", much like the story of the boy in Holland who prevented a flood, as we make a difference in what is going on here on the border.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:28
As I grew up, we moved every 3 - 4 years, including 2 times overseas. When I was 12, I asked Jesus into my heart in a Sunday school class, though I didn’t understand the importance of it yet. It wasn’t until I joined Youth for Christ in high school that I learned about having a personal relationship with Jesus. At 15 I asked Him to be not only my Savior, but my Lord too.
I had been very shy up until then. My friends had even nick-named me ‘Mouse’, but God began to bring me out of my shell. While I was attending college, I found myself in situations where I learned to reach out, help others, and develop leadership skills. I also loved learning skills of running and managing a household. Then, through an office job, I also developed skills in clerical work and accounting.
Shortly after college, I went to a Keith Green memorial concert. Through a video filmed before his death, Keith Green shared about how there were so many people around the world that did not know Jesus, and how so few people were becoming missionaries to reach them. Something stirred within me. In the video, Keith challenged everyone to take a few moments ask God how He wants each of us to be a part of fulfilling Jesus’ last command to “Go”.
I was sure God was going to tell me to pray for others and send money. I bowed my head to pray, and I felt Him say, “Go”!
I scoffed. “I am just an ordinary, everyday person! I am not a Bible teacher or an evangelist! You don’t want me!”
His still small voice said, “Yes, I do want you.”
“But... what about my Cocker Spaniel?” I said, “I love her so much!”
He asked, “Do you love her more than me?”
“No.” I paused, and then said, “But I could never go out and raise support. I am too shy!”
He said, “If you will trust me, I will take care of you.”
It was scary to step outside of my comfort zone, but I obeyed that call and went. My first step was joining a missionary school, and from there, I have ministered in many different countries. I also helped start a missionary base in Grenada, start a training school in the Philippines, and helped addicts overcome addictions in Mexico with my husband.
Now my husband and I run a Christian Discipleship house for ex-offenders and recovering addicts that want to learn to be disciples of Jesus. I also lead a discussion group at church for the women that come to our recovery program. I have realized that with everything I am involved in now, I am using the skills God was preparing me with when I was younger. Clerical work, running a home, adapting to different cultures, and leadership skills. And you know what? We were recently given a Cocker Spaniel... just because we are missionaries! God certainly has a sense of humor, you can trust Him with all the things that are happening in your life. He truly does work all things together for the good of those who love Him!
